I'll be honest - I went into NTE expecting another generic gacha open world. What I got was the first urban open-world RPG that actually feels like a city. Hethereau has traffic, shops, side activities, and a sense of place that most fantasy open worlds can't match. Driving through it at night with the neon reflecting off wet asphalt is a genuine vibe.
The combat is the real highlight. The Esper swap system forces you to think about team composition and rotations - you can't just pick one character and mash buttons. Chaining elemental reactions by swapping between four Espers in real-time is satisfying in a way that most gacha combat isn't. Hotori's time-stop mechanic alone is worth building a team around.
Version 1.1 "Beyond the Rail" added harder content that's testing the meta, and the Steam launch brought a wave of new players. The housing system and side activities (fishing, auctions, hide-and-seek) give you things to do between combat that actually matter - they reward premium currency and upgrade materials.

The Esper Circle is NTE's core combat system — swapping between four Espers triggers elemental reactions. Here are three actual team comps, the rotation for each, and which one fits your account. Not theory — these are teams I run.
Mono Blossom (F2P Friendly)
Low — 1 limited pull requiredReplicates ally skills during time stop. The engine of this team.
Instant Esper Meter refill every 16s. Keeps Blossom reactions rolling.
Most flexible character — fills whatever role the fight needs.
Reliable damage when Hotori is on cooldown. No weaknesses.
Rotation
Swap to Zero → fill Esper Meter → swap to Hotori → replicate Nanally's skill → swap to Lacrimosa for sustained DPS. Repeat every 16 seconds. The Blossom reactions chain continuously.
Strength
Works with mostly standard banner Espers. Only Hotori is limited.
Weakness
Struggles against enemies immune to Blossom reactions.
Jay's note: My main team for 2 months. The rotation is tight but once it clicks, everything dies before you finish your combo. Best F2P team in the game.
Charged Cascade (Whale)
High — 3 limited pulls requiredReplicates Chaos's Charged skill for massive burst.
Post-Ultimate damage boosts + Remora triggers. The Charged engine.
Charge reactions specialist. Shares energy with allies.
Best Anima support for Shinku. Amplifies the whole team.
Rotation
Shinku on-field building Charge stacks → swap to Chaos for Ultimate → Hotori replicates Chaos's Charged skill → Nanally amplifies. The Charged cascade hits 6-figure damage.
Strength
Highest burst damage in the game. Clears any content.
Weakness
Requires 3 limited Espers. Shinku loses buffs on swap — tight rotation.
Jay's note: The whale team. I don't have it yet — missing Chaos. But I've seen it clear content 30 seconds faster than my Mono Blossom. If you're spending, this is the goal.

Rotation
Mi Fu debuffs → Zero fills meter → Lacrimosa bursts → Zhuang Fangyi heals. Simple, reliable, no limited characters needed. The Discord reactions add extra damage over time.
Strength
100% F2P. All characters from standard banner. Works in all content.
Weakness
Lower ceiling than Hotori teams. Slower clears on endgame.
Jay's note: The team I recommend to every new player. No limited pulls needed, and it clears all story content. Upgrade to Mono Blossom when you pull Hotori.

The best character in NTE. Replicates any ally's skill during a time stop, dealing all her damage in zero seconds on the timer. Enables Mono Blossom and Mono Nova teams. Her value is everlasting - no one deals damage faster than her zero-second rotation.
Instant Esper Meter refill every 16 seconds - the most meta-defining feature in the game. With A3 giving 50% Crit Rate, Zero can build full Cycle Intensity for massive Blossom reactions. Best-in-slot for any top-half Esper Circle team.
The most flexible main DPS in the game. Least restrictive in team building and now doubles as the best Anima support for Shinku. The best character to pair with the Hotori + Zero duo. Earns S+ through sheer versatility.
Gold standard top performer. A reliable main DPS with no weaknesses - consistent damage output and strong synergy with premium supports. A safe pull that won't let you down in any content.
Lakshana on-field main carry who relies on post-Ultimate damage boosts and Remora triggers. Best suited for the Charged archetype. A small upgrade over Chiz in Charged teams thanks to Hotori synergy.
Relies on Charge reactions more than any other character and shares energy regeneration with allies. Very high DPS potential but loses buffs on swap and demands long field time - high risk, high reward playstyle.

6 things that will save you hours of frustration in version 1.1
Pull for Hotori first. She's the best character in the game and enables more team archetypes than any other Esper - your account value skyrockets with her.
Learn the Esper Circle. Team composition follows a circle system where top-half and bottom-half Espers pair differently. Understanding this is more important than individual character tier.
Trigger elemental reactions constantly. NTE combat rewards swapping Espers to chain reactions - staying on one character too long is the biggest damage loss in the game.
