Every ship fits into one of four classes. Each has a completely different job on the battlefield. Understanding this is step one.
Battleships (BB)
The tanks. Massive HP pools, devastating main batteries, and armor that bounces smaller shells. Battleships deal the most damage per salvo and can delete cruisers in one good volley. Their job is to absorb pressure and punish mistakes. Weaknesses: slow turret traverse, long reload (25-35 seconds), and massive detection radius — once spotted, you stay spotted. Beginner tip: angle your armor at 30-45 degrees to auto-bounce enemy AP shells. Never show broadside.
Cruisers (CA/CL)
The utility class. Cruisers bring radar, hydro, AA, and rapid-fire guns. Heavy cruisers (CA) have 203mm+ guns and decent armor. Light cruisers (CL) have fast-firing 152mm guns and are squishy. Cruisers control caps with radar, support destroyers, and farm damage on battleships. Weaknesses: citadels everywhere — a battleship salvo will delete you if you show broadside. Beginner tip: use islands as cover. A cruiser behind an island is untouchable. Never sail in open water without an escape plan.
Destroyers (DD)
The scouts and assassins. Destroyers have the best concealment, allowing them to spot enemies undetected, cap objectives, and launch devastating torpedo ambushes. A good DD wins games by controlling vision — your team can't shoot what they can't see. Weaknesses: very low HP, one mistake means instant death. Beginner tip: your survival is more important than a torpedo run. Stay alive, keep spotting, and the torpedo opportunities will come naturally.
Aircraft Carriers (CV)
The aerial commanders. Carriers launch squadrons of bombers, torpedo bombers, and attack aircraft. They provide team-wide spotting and can strike targets anywhere on the map. Carriers are protected by their team — they rarely engage directly. Weaknesses: vulnerable if isolated, squadron management has a learning curve. Beginner tip: don't start with CVs. Learn surface ships first so you understand what your teammates need from you as a CV player.
2. Pick Your First Ship Line
The game has 11 nations and dozens of tech tree lines. Don't overthink it — start with one of these three, proven to be the most beginner-friendly.
US Battleships → Montana
Easy DifficultyThe most forgiving line. Consistent accuracy, strong armor, decent AA. No gimmicks — just solid fundamentals. Montana is versatile and competitive at Tier X. You'll learn proper positioning and angling without being punished as hard as in other lines.
Japanese Destroyers → Shimakaze
Medium DifficultyLearn stealth and torpedo mechanics with the best concealment in the game. Japanese DDs teach patience and map awareness — skills that transfer to every other class. Nothing beats the dopamine hit of landing 15 Shimakaze torpedoes.
German Battleships → Preussen
Medium DifficultyTurtleback armor means you won't get citadeled at close range. Secondaries do the work for you. Push in, get close, and brawl. The most fun battleship line for aggressive players who hate sniping from 20km.
3. Master Core Mechanics
These are the systems every captain must understand. Ignore them and you'll lose battles you should have won.
Armor Angling & Penetration
World of Warships uses realistic shell ballistics. The angle at which a shell hits armor determines whether it penetrates, bounces, or overmatches. When you show your broadside (flat side of your ship) to an enemy, you're presenting a flat surface for their shells to penetrate — and every ship has a citadel (the most vulnerable part) right in the middle. Angle your bow at 30-45 degrees to the enemy and most AP shells will auto-bounce. This is the single most important defensive mechanic.
Detection & Concealment
Every ship has a detection radius. If an enemy enters this radius, you are spotted and appear on their minimap. Detection works both ways — if you can see them, they can probably see you. Destroyers and cruisers rely on concealment for survival. When you fire your main guns, your detection radius blooms (increases) for 20 seconds. This is why you should never fire from open water in a cruiser — you'll be spotted and deleted.
Aiming: Lead Your Targets
Shells take time to travel — at 15km, battleship shells take 8-12 seconds to land. You must aim ahead of (lead) moving targets. The dynamic crosshair shows shell travel time. Watch the target's smoke — it indicates their speed and direction. Aim at the waterline for citadel hits, or higher for superstructure damage. Practice in Co-op mode until leading targets feels natural.
Map Awareness & Minimap
Press '+' to make your minimap bigger — do it now. The minimap is your most important information source. It shows: all spotted enemies and friendlies, cap points and their status, last known positions of unspotted ships, torpedo warnings, and radar/hydro ranges. A captain who watches their minimap wins 30% more games. Check it every 5 seconds.
Damage Types: AP vs HE vs SAP
AP (Armor Piercing): Best against broadside targets. Penetrates armor for massive citadel damage. Bounces off angled armor. HE (High Explosive): Never bounces. Sets fires and breaks modules (turrets, torpedo tubes, engine). Use against angled targets or when the enemy is bow-in. SAP (Semi-Armor Piercing): Italian specialty — pens armor like HE but deals heavy damage like AP. Cannot start fires.
4. Economy Without Spending Money
World of Warships is genuinely free-to-play. You can build a competitive fleet without ever spending a cent. Here's how.
Pick 'More Coal' Daily Containers
Every day you earn XP, you get container choices. ALWAYS pick 'More Coal'. Coal accumulates fast and buys premium ships from the Armory — completely free. A consistent player earns 40k-60k coal per month. Napoli (best cruiser in the game) costs ~252k coal — 4-5 months of daily play.
Join a Clan Immediately
Clans give passive bonuses: -15% ship purchase cost, -15% post-battle service cost, +50% coal, +50% steel, and +5% XP. Even dead/inactive clans give these bonuses. Join any clan with a developed base — it's the single biggest F2P accelerator.
Premium Ships = Credit Printers
Premium ships have a hidden credit multiplier. Tier VIII premiums earn the most credits per battle. Your first coal ship should be a Tier IX or X for grinding, but eventually grab a Tier VIII premium for credit farming. Mainz, Atago, and Kidd are excellent choices.
Never Sell Ships
Snowflake events (Anniversary in September, New Year) give rewards for every Tier V+ ship in your port. A Tier X ship gives a Supercontainer. Keep your ships — they pay dividends during events. The credit refund from selling is never worth the lost event rewards.
5. The 10 Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make
I made all of these. Learn from my pain.
Showing broadside in a cruiser — instant trip back to port.
Firing guns from open water without an escape plan — your detection blooms and everything shoots you.
Ignoring the minimap — you get flanked, torped, and deleted without ever seeing it coming.
Rushing to Tier X without learning lower tiers — Tier VIII+ players will punish every mistake. Learn at Tiers IV-VI.
Selling ships for credits — you lose the ship and the credits are negligible. Snowflakes alone make keeping ships worth it.
Not angling armor — sailing straight at or away from enemies gives them your flat side. Always angle 30-45 degrees.
YOLO torpedo runs in a destroyer — dying in the first 3 minutes loses the game for your entire team. Stay alive, spot, torp later.
Using Damage Control Party on a single fire — save it for multiple fires or flooding. A single fire is manageable.
Grinding stock ships in Random Battles — use Free XP to unlock key modules (hull, range, torpedoes) before taking a ship into PvP.
Not using premium consumables — they're cheap to buy with credits and the extra charge/faster cooldown wins battles.
6. Your First 30 Days — A Roadmap
Follow this timeline and you'll hit Tier X with real skills, not just a port full of ships you don't know how to play.
Play Co-op battles. Learn the controls, aiming, and minimap. Try all four classes at Tiers I-III. Find what you enjoy. Don't rush to higher tiers.
Pick one beginner-friendly line (US BBs, IJN DDs, German BBs) and grind to Tier V. Start playing Random Battles at Tier IV-V. Expect to die — it's normal. Watch replays of your deaths.
Reach Tier VI-VII. Join a clan for the economic bonuses. Start collecting coal daily. Begin buying premium consumables with credits (they're worth it). Watch YouTube guides from top players.
Reach Tier VIII. This is where the real game begins. You'll face Tier X ships regularly. Learn to play from a disadvantage — being bottom tier teaches you more than being top tier.
Milestone: Unlock your first Tier VIII ship
Approach or reach Tier X in your chosen line. You should have 50k+ coal by now. Start planning your first coal ship purchase (Napoli or Marceau). Try Ranked battles for steel.
Milestone: 50k+ coal, Tier IX-X ship unlocked
